Who is Cllr. Jonathan Millard
Jonathan Millard has proudly served as an Independent Councillor for Ebbw Vale South since 2017, dedicating nearly a decade to representing the heart of Blaenau Gwent with integrity and commitment. Re-elected with an impressive 60% of the vote in the February 2024 by-election, Jonathan’s consistent focus on community needs has earned him the trust and respect of constituents across the ward.
Born and raised in Blaenau Gwent, Jonathan attended local schools including Briery Hill, Glan-Yr-Afon, and Ebbw Vale, before graduating with honours from Oxford University. A "tump" boy originally, he remains rooted in the community, residing in Hilltop. His deep connection to the area fuels his passion for preserving its rich industrial heritage, including the legacy of Aneurin Bevan, while driving progress for future generations.

Over the past decade, Jonathan has been a tireless advocate for Ebbw Vale South, championing initiatives that address key local challenges. He has actively worked to reduce the number of councillors, streamlining governance to enhance efficiency. His efforts to improve infrastructure include leading numerous road resurfacing projects, enhancing connectivity and safety across the ward. Jonathan has also prioritized educational opportunities, collaborating with local schools like Ebbw Fawr Learning Community to support better outcomes for students. His commitment to sustainable development has seen him promote environmentally friendly initiatives, aligning with broader county borough goals.
Jonathan’s leadership extends beyond the ward, with significant roles representing Blaenau Gwent on the Gwent Police Crime Commissioners Panel, where he influenced community safety policies, and as the patient voice for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, advocating for improved healthcare services. His engagement with constituents is a hallmark of his tenure, hosting regular councillor surgeries and leveraging social media forums to ensure residents’ voices shape decision-making. Known for his friendly, approachable demeanour and willingness to listen, Jonathan has fostered strong relationships with both constituents and fellow councillors.
His record reflects a dedication to transparency and independence, refusing to align with party whips and instead focusing on what’s right for Ebbw Vale South and Blaenau Gwent. Key achievements include tackling fly-tipping, pushing for more police patrols, and encouraging active lifestyles through better paths and cycle routes. As a community leader—evidenced by his role as a boxing MC and organiser of the Ray Reardon tribute—Jonathan continues to inspire pride in local heritage while addressing modern challenges like housing shortages and the cost-of-living crisis.
Jonathan Millard remains committed to serving Ebbw Vale South with the same passion and independence that has defined his decade-long tenure, ensuring a brighter, fairer future for all residents.
